In this affecting survey, Schwarzenegger Pratt (I Just Graduated… Now What?) explores forgiveness through 22 interviews with people who have experienced tragedy or suffered loss. Interview subjects include parents of children killed in the Columbine and Sandy Hook shootings; kidnapping victim Elizabeth Smart; Tanya Brown, sister of Nicole Brown Simpson; and the wife of Chester Bennington, a rock musician who killed himself in 2017. Schwarzenegger Pratt weaves her own personal experiences and reflections throughout and shares lessons from each person’s story, such as practicing self-love, the power of using prayer, and the importance of releasing the burden of guilt or shame and respecting the process of grief. Schwarzenegger Pratt emphasizes that forgiveness happens one step a time: “Forgiveness starts with a choice, and then it becomes a process.” Most of the stories involve the subject’s deep yearning to be free of painful thoughts and emotions, and their movement toward forgiveness often requires honestly looking into memories and past choices. Schwarzenegger Pratt concludes with a helpful list of resources, including organizations and projects dedicated to spreading awareness about the power of forgiveness. Those looking for help with letting go and moving on will love this. This book was received as an ARC from PENGUIN GROUP Viking - Pamela Dorman Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own. This book was read at the right time. I loved the stories Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt shares throughout the book and the powerful message each of them express and the theme each person got from forgiving their culprits. Plus the advice Katherine shares after each story is really powerful and has a lot of great insight that everyone can learn from. The two that spoke to me the most is Chris Williams who lost his wife and kids to a car crash by a drunk driver and Sue Klebold whose son Dylan was one of the shooters at Columbine and she really had to struggle accepting what her son has done and the trauma he caused from killing all of those students. Katherine really digs deep and if they can forgive the people that have caused them trauma, everyone can find forgiveness in everyone no matter how tough the circumstance is and no matter how long it takes. Nothing happens overnight and forgiveness is not any different but some do find closure and justice in themselves all by forgiving. As Katherine says, "When we learn to embrace forgiveness, it opens us up to healing, hope, and a new world of possibility." We will consider adding this title to our Non-Fiction self-help collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
